Language Enrichment at the Park
Simple ways to support your child’s communication this Spring and Summer.
The sunshine is here! As families spend more time outdoors, the park becomes more than just a place to play - it’s a perfect setting for language development. I’ve seen it firsthand in some of our beautiful local spots including Kate’s Place, Lion’s Park, and the Splash Pad at Bolender Park - right here in Elmira.
At Clearway Speech, we help parents use everyday moments to support communication skills, especially when routines shift during the summer months.
Why the Park?
Playgrounds are full of opportunities for building language—no flashcards or worksheets needed. All it takes is curiosity and a few simple strategies.
Try These Language-Building Techniques:
Modeling: Say what you want your child to repeat.
“I see a bug.”Parallel Talk: Describe what your child is doing.
“You’re climbing!”Self-Talk: Describe what you’re doing.
“I’m pushing the swing.”Expansion: Correct and build on what your child says.
Child: “Me go slide.” → You: “I’m going on the slide!”Focused Stimulation: Repeat key words to highlight them.
“Step up—step up—step up.”
Words to Sprinkle In:
climb, slide, spin, push, squeaky, bumpy, again!, my turn, fast, slow, tunnel, sand, sunny
Even a simple moment like helping your child up a ladder becomes a language-learning opportunity.
